Physical Therapist Interventions for Parkinson Disease

Approximately 1% of Americans over 60 are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and physical therapists will encounter these patients in a myriad of settings including inpatient, acute rehabilitation, sub-acute rehabilitation, outpatient, and home health. It is paramount for physical therapists to be able to apply the literature such as the Cochrane systematic review which explores the evidence of the effectiveness both for and against the specific interventions for patients with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease (PD), including but not limited to, medications, nutrition, education, physical therapy. Through a thorough analysis of a systematic review, the reader will be able to critically synthesize the information presented to answer the question “Can physical therapy intervention strategies improve the physical functioning in an individual with PD, to prevent functional decline related to the progressive nature of the disease?”
