IPEP SIG Journal Club: Could Primary Contact Physical Therapy Improve Emergency Department Care While Being Efficient? A 3-Month Cost-Utility Analysis
https://www.jospt.org/doi/abs/10.2519/jospt.2025.13429
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the Educational Session, attendees will be able to:
1. Explain the methodology and key components of a cost-utility analysis (including QALYs, ICERs, and economic perspectives) as applied to emergency department models of care for musculoskeletal conditions.
2. Critically appraise the strengths and limitations of embedding an economic evaluation within a pilot randomized clinical trial and interpret the implications of a “dominant” finding in health economics.
3. Apply the study’s findings to academic and health system contexts by analyzing how primary contact physical therapy models may influence curriculum design, scope of practice discussions, and system-level decision-making.
