Course Information

Physical Therapists who bill Medicare for outpatient physical therapy services in private practice settings (using the 1500 claim form or 837-P) can obtain a 0.5% bonus payment in 2014 if they report on quality measures under a program, referred to as the Physician Quality Reporting System or PQRS. In addition, physical therapists who successfully report under the PQRS program in 2014 will avoid the 2.0% reduction in payment from Medicare in 2016.

Heather Smith, PT, MPH, Program Director of Quality at APTA, will tell you what you need to know about the Physician Quality Reporting System for 2014, including program changes impacting physical therapists, and provide practical approaches for participating. During the Q & A session following the presentation, you may ask your questions directly to the experts.

Objectives

Upon completion of this webinar, you will be able to:
  1. Illustrate the purpose of the PQRS program and the relationship between reporting and payment.

  2. Identify the quality measures for 2014 that apply to physical therapists in private practice settings.

  3. Characterize the anatomy of a PQRS measure and the distinction between reporting the individual measures and measures groups.

  4. Describe the successful reporting requirements for 2014 and identify common mistakes associated with unsuccessful reporting by physical therapists.

  5. Determine the changes to practice operations you need to make in order to participate successfully in the PQRS program in 2014.

Presenter Bio (s)


Heather Smith, PT, MPH, is the program director of quality initiatives in the Department of Health Finance and Quality at APTA. In her current role, Smith provides leadership and management in matters of quality improvement, initiatives and policies, including the coordination of the association's public policy goals as well as the strategic objectives of payment and standards of practice. Previously, Smith worked in the Quality Improvement Division for both New York Presbyterian Hospital and the University of Pennsylvania Health System, where she gained expertise in quality measurement and public reporting. Her transition into quality was facilitated in part by the acquisition of her master's degree in public health from Drexel University. Previous to her role in quality improvement, she was a practicing clinician for over 10 years, with the majority of her focus in orthopedic outpatient setting. Smith received her bachelor's degree in physical therapy from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

On successful completion of the examination, 0.2 CEUs (2.0 contact hours/CCUs) and a certificate of completion will be awarded. The American Physical Therapy Association has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET), 1760 Old Meadow Road, Suite 500, McLean, VA 22102. Provider (#380).

  • Once you have listened to the presentation and completed all activities, continue to the Posttest page within the course to complete the learning activity. You must complete the online posttest with at least 70% accuracy to pass the course.

  • In order to Claim Credit, return to the "My Courses" page in the APTA Learning Center to complete the postcourse evaluation.

  • Once the postcourse evaluation is submitted, you will be able to print your CEU certificate.
