5 million adults are admitted to intensive care units each year and up to 80% of survivors will experience physical problems, such as weakness, impaired ambulation and reduced performance of activities of daily living. These problems are due to post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) – a constellation of physical, cognitive, and psychological problems that may persist for months and years after hospitalization. Physical therapists should manage the rehabilitation of patients with PICS and this webinar will prepare them to recognize the unique presentation of PICS and provide evidence-based service. Participants will also review strategies for educating referral sources (eg, physicians, nurse practitioners) about the value of referral to a physical therapist for treatment to improve physical performance and quality of life.
