Obesity has reached reached epidemic proportions. It is a worldwide problem, affecting an estimated 300 million people, with an increasing prevalence in both developed and developing countries. Obesity contributes to numerous chronic diseases and early mortality. Furthermore, it has a profound, negative effect on quality of life in children and adolescents as well as adults.

Phys Ther. 2003;83:276-288), you should be able to: 1. Discuss the etiology, extent, and impact of obesity in the United States. 2. Explain how the body mass index (BMI) can be used to classify adults as being normal weight, overweight, or obese. 3. Understand the physiological, psychological, and public health consequences of obesity and how they may affect delivery of health care, including physical therapy. 4. Describe the implications of obesity for approaches to examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention. 5. Identify research needs.
