Aquatic Clinical Applications: Pool Course

Participants will experience hands-on, in-pool training to integrate skills and knowledge learned from the previous 6 online modules of the Aquatic Physical Therapy Clinical Competency Certificate Series. Emphasis will be placed on handling techniques to give participants confidence to apply their knowledge to a wide base of treatment applications. Participants will be challenged to maximize the effectiveness of their treatments using the unique properties of water and pool equipment. A variety of specialty aquatic therapy techniques will be introduced, and multiple case studies will illustrate the aquatic therapy continuum from evaluation to discharge to wellness. Participants can expect to be in the pool for the majority of the course and will be tested on their handling skills as well as integration of all online and pool course material.

This course is for licensed PTs and licensed PTAs. To successfully complete this course:
Secure the passcode for the posttest from the instructors. Once you have progressed through the course lessons and resources, you must take an assessment of learning. You are required to complete the assessment with at least 70% accuracy in order to claim CEU credit. You may retake the assessment as many times as you like.

Learning objectives
- Apply critical thinking to evidence-based practice to support the need for aquatic physical therapy intervention.
- Recognize and respond to potential challenges prior to pool entry for specific patient populations.
- Appropriately select pool equipment best suited for patient treatment goals.
- Demonstrate ability to logically progress exercise in the water.
- Confidently handle patients of all types in the water in all depths and all positions.
- Apply clinical interventions for gait and balance training in the water.
- Apply principals of postural control to improve patient functional outcomes during aquatic therapy treatments.
- Integrate aquatic techniques for maximizing muscle performance during aquatic physical therapy treatments.
- Demonstrate modifications to accommodate possible sensory integration challenges when in aquatic treatment sessions.
- Develop appropriate cardiovascular fitness elements to integrate into unique treatment sessions based on specific patient needs.
- Demonstrate basic familiarity with these aquatic specialty techniques and be familiar with current research supporting these techniques for use in rehabilitation and wellness: Halliwick, Bad Ragaz Ring Method, Watsu, Burdenko, Ai Chi, Aqua Yoga, and Aqua Stretch.
- Appropriately document to support and justify the medical necessity of aquatic physical therapy services.
