Caring for people in their time of need is a calling for most physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, but some people and communities don’t have the access or support needed to benefit from physical therapy services. This course will provide physical therapy professionals with practical strategies for advancing health equity through partnership with underserved communities, locally or abroad.
Meet our Speaker
V. Kai Kennedy, PT, DPT, is an assistant professor in the Duke University Doctor of Physical Therapy Division, where is the director of community and global outreach. She has extensive experience providing rehabilitative care in underserved communities in the United States, the Caribbean, and West Africa. Kennedy holds a bachelor’s degree in kinesiological sciences from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a doctor of physical therapy degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has a keen interest in developing innovative curricular strategies that prepare students to provide effective care for marginalized populations and to promote health equity globally, and ongoing projects include an interprofessional peer learning program in Haiti and the development of the first physical therapy education program in Sierra Leone. Kennedy is a fellow in the Leaders for Health Equity Fellowship program at the George Washington University, and among other highlights of her longstanding record of professional service are being on the board of directors of the APTA Education Section and on the APTA Staff Work Group for Diversity and Inclusion.
