Aquatic Physiology of Immersion

This course is a pre-requisite required to complete the Aquatic Physical Therapy Clinical Competency Certificate. This course is designed to educate the physical therapist and physical therapy assistant regarding those physiological changes that occur with immersion. This information may assist the physical therapist in planning an efficient treatment plan and recognizing those who may be physiologically at risk to participate in aquatic therapy at a given point in the rehabilitation process.

Learning objectives

Following completion of the course, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the physiological responses associated with immersion on the major systems of the body including cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, musculoskeletal and renal systems 2. Understand importance of temperature relative to each of these systems 3. Apply specific physiological principles to explain effects of immersion relative to predicted responses of therapeutic interventions 4. Cite literature to support the use of aquatics to enhance therapeutic interventions 5. Understand the effects of immersion on the trained vs. sedentary individual with respect to the cardiovascular, pulmonary, musculoskeletal , endocrine and renal systems 6. Recognize the normal and abnormal responses associated with immersion 7. Recognize potential for deleterious responses due to immersion
