Repetitive Stress injury in Youth Athletes

Recent data estimates that 30-45 million youth aged 6 to 18 participate in organized athletics. Concomitant with increased participation is an increasing prevalence of sports injuries. More than 3.5 million sports-related injuries that require medical attention occur in children between the ages of 5 and 14. Of those, up to 50% can be considered repetitive-stress injuries. Effective management requires a multidisciplinary approach, with the role of the physical therapist both critical and evolving. As the role of physical therapists expands with direct access, the importance grows of proper differential diagnosis and evidence-based treatment by pediatric, orthopedic, and sports physical therapists. This course provides an overview of the most recent evidence related to differential diagnosis and treatment of common upper extremity and lower extremity repetitive stress injuries in youth athletes. Case examples drive home key points.
