Approval of APTA Courses for State License Renewal
IMPORTANT:Continuing education requirements are regulated by the state boards of physical therapy. Each state licensing board has its own policies and procedures related to continuing education of its licensees. State boards of physical therapy place the responsibility on licensees to follow rules and regulations related to the practice of physical therapy and maintenance of licensure in their states. Licensees should verify acceptance of continuing education courses with their state licensing board by reviewing the relevant state practice act and/or administrative code.
APTA CEUs are accepted by most state physical therapy licensure boards, as allowed by the type of course requirements in state regulations. Please check with your local chapter or state board to ensure that they accept our online courses for licensure renewal. Some exceptions or special considerations are provided below. It is highly recommended that if you wish to use one of our courses to meet your renewal requirements, check with your state/local board BEFORE purchasing it. Most courses provide all CEU details in the description, but we are not always made aware of new rulings set forth by states/chapters.
A small number of states require that APTA apply for pre-approval of courses including California, Oklahoma and Texas. APTA obtains approval from these states. The approval codes for these states, when relevant, are listed within the course details pages.
APTA is an Approved Provider through the California Physical Therapy Association Approved Continuing Education Program; APTA’s Approved Provider number is CPTA2018-2019.
APTA Combined Sections Meeting and NEXT Conference CEUs and contact hours may be applied to Category II, Continuing Education Courses, as outlined in by the Colorado Board of Physical Therapy’s Professional Development Activities List on the board’s website. As such, 1 contact hour equals ½ point. Please see the information provided by the State Physical Therapy Board on Continuing Professional Competency.
Nevada Board of Physical Therapy Examiners does not approve credits above 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) since licensees must earn 1.5 CEUs (15 contact hours) per year for licensure renewal and no hours may be carried over to the next licensure cycle. For example, for APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting, up to 1.8 CEUs may be earned at the conference, but Nevada will only approve up to 1.0 CEUs. Additionally, the Nevada Board of Physical Therapy Examiners does not allow more than .8 CEUs (8 contact hours) to be awarded for content that is not considered clinical. APTA online courses are NOT all approved for Ohio. Please check with OPTA to confirm approval prior to purchasing any course.
APTA is designated as a pre-approved provider by the Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy. Pennsylvania does not accept CEUs or contact hours awarded for courses pertaining to practice management, practice building, dry-needling, payment policy or regulatory requirements. APTA is an Accredited Provider through the Texas Physical Therapy Association Continuing Competence Approval Program. APTA’s Accredited Provider number in Texas is 1909019TX.
APTA’s ethics courses may be applied to general credits in Texas since APTA does not apply for approved ethics credits through the Texas Physical Therapy Association. Because ethics content required for Texas licensees must cover Texas-specific laws and regulations, APTA’s courses do not meet the minimum requirements for ethics credit approval.
APTA is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). APTA complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard, which is recognized internationally as a standard of excellence in instructional practices. As a result of this accreditation, APTA is authorized to issue the IACET CEU.
