Residency and Fellowship Education Journal Club: National Study Examining Excellence and Value in Physical Therapist Residency Education (PT-REV Study
This RFESIG Academy of Education Journal Club is a live, interactive session that explores the national PT-REV study on excellence and value in residency education. Dr. Matthew Briggs and Dr. Raine Osborne, co-lead authors of the study, will present key findings and facilitate dialogue on actionable strategies for enhancing post-professional education. Open to RFESIG members and the broader community, this session offers opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional development, and reflection on residency best practices. CEUs available upon completion of assessment.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
• Describe elements of excellence and value in physical therapist residency education as identified in the PT-REV study.
• Apply key findings from Briggs et al. (2024) and Osborne et al. (2024) to practical challenges in residency and fellowship education.
• Engage in critical discussion with primary authors regarding implications for program design, mentorship, and educational leadership.
• Identify strategies for advancing adaptive expertise and professional formation in post-professional clinical education.

Matthew S. Briggs PT, DPT, PhD, AT

Matt Briggs PT, DPT, PhD, AT, is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics, Researcher in Ambulatory Rehabilitation and the Sports Medicine Research Institute, and former Director of the Sports Physical Residency program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He is also a Lecturer in the Division of Physical Therapy at >span class="apple-converted-space"> optimize systems and strategies for the delivery of rehabilitation interventions with a focus on improving care efficiency and quality while maximizing patient outcomes in diverse patient populations. He pursues his research agenda through multiple lenses including health services research, health informatics, educational research, movement analysis, and interventional approaches/strategies. With over 40 peer-reviewed publications he has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, Rheumatology Research Foundation, Academy of Physical Therapy Education, Ohio Athletic Trainers Association, and Ohio Physical Therapy Association.

Raine Osborne, PT, DPT, EdD, FAAOMPT

Raine Osborne, PT, DPT, EdD, FAAOMPT is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of North Florida, Director of Research for the Brooks Institute of Higher Learning (IHL), and a member of the Brooks IHL Residency and Fellowship Program faculty. Dr. Osborne has practiced as a physical therapist for over 16 years, specializing in orthopaedics with a particular interest in spine and chronic pain. He has also been a physical therapist educator for over 12 years, providing instruction and mentorship across the physical therapist education continuum (DPT, residency, and fellowship). As a researcher, Dr. Osborne’s primary interest is in understanding the complex mix of personal characteristics and environmental factors that drive innovation and excellence in rehabilitation practice. Areas of focus within this research agenda include professional engagement, physical therapist residency and fellowship education, teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning, and interprofessional education.
