For physical therapy and physical therapy assistant students to develop required collaborative practice skills, they must have interprofessional education opportunities during their didactic and clinical training. Additionally, they must have intraprofessional practice to develop strong relationships that reflect their understanding of the relationship between and practice scope between PTs and PTAs. Research increasingly supports computer-based simulations to provide students with an alternative approach for mastering the Interprofessional Education Collaborative's four essential collaborative practice competencies. This course presents strategies to address the competencies by integrating interactive computer-based simulation into curricula while including best practice methodologies and debriefing rubrics. Computer-based education platforms like Simucase® provide students with interactive experiences designed to teach complete processes using virtual client scenarios. During an assessment or intervention for a virtual client, students must collaborate with and learn from other care team members. Students gain practice interviewing a client, performing assessments, providing intervention, and designing a plan of care. In doing so, they learn about scope of practice, care teams, roles and responsibilities, and appropriate communication required to achieve optimal patient care.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify how the four core competencies of interprofessional practice can be met using interactive computer-based simulation.
2. Develop a framework for integrating computer-based simulation into curricula to address inter/intraprofessional collaborative practice.
3. Demonstrate how to facilitate a successful simulation activity debrief discussion.
