Sustaining the Educator: A Panel Discussion on Faculty Burnout, Retention, and Work-Life Balance in Physical Therapy Education

Jill Jumper

Jill Jumper, PT, DPT, PhD, currently serves as Dean of the College of Health Professions and Associate Professor of physical therapy at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Dr. Jumper originally taught in a physical therapist assistant program as Director of Clinical Education (DCE) and then transitioned to the Hardin-Simmons University Doctor of Physical Therapy program where she has served as faculty, DCE, and Program Director prior to becoming Dean. Dr. Jumper earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Abilene Christian University, a Masters and Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Hardin-Simmons University, and finally, a Doctor of Philosophy from Texas Woman’s University. Her research focus is on physical therapist education and on improved treatments for people with Parkinson’s Disease. She has been a licensed physical therapist for 23 years and is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy. Dr. Jumper has worked in many settings as a physical therapist including outpatient orthopedics, skilled nursing, acute care, and home health. Outside of work, Dr. Jumper has been married for 33 years to her wonderful husband, Alan, and loves spending time with her three kids and four amazing grandkids.

Christina Wisdom, PT, DPT, EdD

Christina Wisdom, PT, DPT, EdD is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Tufts University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program – Seattle. She holds board certification as a Clinical Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy and is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, with additional training in pelvic health and leadership development. Dr. Wisdom’s teaching portfolio spans a wide range of foundational and advanced topics, including musculoskeletal and medical conditions, therapeutic interventions, professional formation, and leadership. She is passionate about preparing future physical therapists for whole-person, evidence-informed care and advancing the profession through education that integrates clinical reasoning, collaboration, and wellness. Her research explores the intersections of professional and leadership development in physical therapy, relational coordination and its impact on well-being and organizational culture, and strategies to enhance health and wellness among students, faculty, and clinicians. Dr. Wisdom’s work has been presented at national conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Clinically, Dr. Wisdom practices in a private outpatient orthopedic and pelvic health physical therapy clinic in Kansas City, where she continues to treat a diverse caseload of patients. Her clinical practice informs her teaching and scholarship, ensuring relevance and depth in the classroom and beyond. In addition to her academic and clinical work, Dr. Wisdom is deeply involved in service to the profession. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the APTA Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy and is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), including the APTA Academy of Physical Therapy Education and the APTA Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy. She is also a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, reflecting her commitment to whole-person and preventive care. Dr. Wisdom brings a collaborative and student-centered approach to physical therapy education, grounded in clinical excellence, academic leadership, and a deep commitment to advancing the movement system and human health.

Dr. Catherine (Kate) Andrea, PT, MPT, EdD

Dr. Catherine (Kate) Andrea is a dedicated physical therapist with over a decade of diverse clinical experience prior to transitioning to academia. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in St. Augustine, FL. She received her Bachelor of Science from Ohio University in 2003 and her Master of Physical Therapy from Cleveland State in 2005. In 2021, she received her Doctor of Education (EdD) from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences where she earned the Excellence in Dissertation Research Award. In 2013, Dr. Andrea earned her Board Certification as a Specialist in Neurologic Physical Therapy and in 2018, she earned her Board Certification as a Specialist in Pediatric Physical Therapy. Most recently, she earned her Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator® (CHSE®) credential and actively contributes to the design and implementation of simulation-based learning experiences across the curriculum. She has taught courses in patient management, pediatrics, orthotics and prosthetics, acute and post-acute care, neuromuscular interventions, evidence-informed practice, and physical therapy fundamentals. Dr. Andrea’s scholarly work focuses on enhancing healthcare education through innovative teaching strategies, interprofessional collaboration, and student wellness. Her research spans simulation-based learning, pediatric physical therapy education, work-life balance in academic settings, and the impact of lifestyle factors such as sleep and screen time on student performance. With multiple peer-reviewed publications and national and international presentations, she has contributed to advancing evidence-based education in physical therapy. Dr. Andrea has also led and collaborated on several funded research projects, including studies on pediatric outcome measures, interventions for children with participation restrictions, and academic performance predictors in graduate healthcare student
