JoPTE Journal ClubAcademic Coaching in Entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy Education

The journal club session is a one hour session that reviews a pertinent topic in PT Education.  This session includes a brief presentation of the chosen article with structured breakout rooms discussing in small groups outcomes and implications of the chosen article.  Large group discussion and reporting of items of discussion and implications to PT education concludes the session.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the Educational Session, attendees will

  1. Understand the difference between coaching and advising for PT entry-level education
  2. Describe the development of a coaching program in a PT entry-level education program
  3. Describe the implementation of a coaching program in a PT entry-level education program
  4. Describe how a program evaluates the coaching program in a PT entry-level education program


Journal Club Timeline

4:00-4:05 pm        Introductions and guidelines

4:05-4:20 pm        Authors present a summary of topic

4:20-4:25 pm        Questions from online chat; prepared questions if needed

4:25-4:40 pm         Breakout room discussion

4:40-4:55 pm         Sharing from breakout room and large group discussion

4:55-5:00 pm        Wrap up, post-presentation evaluation, CEU quiz


Kayla Black, PT, DPT, EdD

Kayla Black, PT, DPT, EdD

Kayla Black is the DPT Director of Student Affairs and Assistant Professor in the Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. She has a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Duke University and a Doctor of Education in Leadership and Innovation from Arizona State University. She completed the Faculty Development Residency and the Teaching for Equity Fellowship at Duke University prior to her first full-time faculty position. Kayla completed the CoachTrainingEDU Academic Life Coaching Program and utilized this training to develop the Academic Coaching Program in the HPU DPT program in 2022. Her dissertation was on training and supporting faculty members to coach DPT students.
