Contemporary preparation, as defined by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), reflects the minimum skill required for entry-level preparation of the physical therapist assistant (PTA) and the needs of the area workforce as documented by the program, plus requires preparation for evidence based practice (EBP). Contemporary practice in all areas of therapy rely heavily on the use of reliable and valid tests and measures to substantiate treatment. Incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) and functional outcome measures (FOM) into an already fast-paced PTA program can be difficult. This session will challenge academic and clinical education faculty to think beyond what they may currently be teaching PTA students about EBP and FOM, and create meaningful activities to facilitate PTAs in becoming a well-equipped clinician who can provide support in this area. APTAs Librarian will lead participants in using the APTA web site to search for resources relevant to contemporary practice, including research articles, Cochrane Systematic Reviews, Clinical Practice Guidelines, etc. By sharing this knowledge, educators will improve the PTA graduate's ability to partner with his/her supervisory physical therapist in reaching optimal patient outcomes.

This course is to be done in 2 parts. Part I Threading EBP and FOM by presenter one and Part II Using the APTA web site to search for Resources by presenter two.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Create meaningful activities to facilitate PTA student's knowledge and appreciation of EBP and FOM.
  2. Design program threads integrating EBP and FOM throughout a PTA curriculum, strengthening the PTA graduate’s ability to partner with his/her supervisory PT in reaching optimal patient outcomes.
