Stay current with the latest updates to the Alabama Physical Therapy Practice Act and Administrative Code. Designed for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students, this course offers an in-depth review of the laws, rules, and regulations governing physical therapy practice in Alabama. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of their professional responsibilities and receive practical insights for applying legal and ethical principles in professional practice. This course satisfies the jurisprudence education licensure renewal requirement and is also helpful for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students preparing to take the jurisprudence exam.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the goals, structure, and responsibilities of the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy.
2. Explain the purpose, structure, and key elements of the Alabama Physical Therapy Practice Act and Administrative Code.
3. Articulate the roles and responsibilities of licensed PTs and PTAs and non-licensed personnel in physical therapy practice.
4. Apply the Alabama Physical Therapy Practice Act and Administrative Code to evaluate legal and ethical challenges in physical therapy practice.

Andrea Bowens, PT, DPT, PhD

Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist

Dr. Andrea Bowens is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She earned her bachelor's and DPT degrees from the University of Florida, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Mercer University. She is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist and has over 15 years of experience treating patients in outpatient orthopedic setting and teaching in the musculoskeletal curriculum of DPT education. She has served APTA House of Delegates, APTA Alabama, and ACAPT in leadership roles over the last 10 years.

Donald Lein, PT, PhD

Donald H. Lein Jr., PT, PhD is a Professor, the Bergman/Pinkston Endowed Professor in Physical Therapy, Director of the Graduate Certificate in Primary Care Physical Therapy for Underserved Populations, and the Director of Continuing Education and Community Outreach in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He continues to practice part time in the UAB Osteoporosis
Prevention and Treatment Center at the Kirklin Clinic. His research interests include developing and implementing physical therapy interventions to improve the care of individuals with chronic conditions, exploring the role of physical therapists in providing health promotion and education while providing typical physical therapy services, and developing and testing educational strategies to enhance Doctor of Physical Therapy
education. He has a special interest in delivering primary care physical therapy to underserved populations and marginalized communities. He has published manuscripts in peer -review journals and presented nationally and internationally concerning his research interests. He has served as Delegate, Chief Delegate, and President of APTA Alabama. He has received several awards for excellence in patient care at UAB, the
2014 Marilyn Gossman Award for Professionalism in Physical Therapy, the Fall 2017 UAB Disability Support Services Outstanding Recognition Award, and the 2024 UAB School of Health Professions Excellence in Service Award.

David M Morris

PT, PhD, FAPTA

Dr. Morris is UAB Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He earned a BS in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; a MS in physical therapy education and a PhD in health education/promotion from UAB. He is also a Credentialed Fellowship Graduate from the APTA Education Leadership Institute Fellowship. He has been a member of the UAB Constraint Induced (CI) Therapy Research Group since 1994. He is Training Coordinator for the UAB Training for CI Therapy program and conducts CI therapy training programs for rehabilitation professionals worldwide. He has authored and/or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters concerning the topics of aquatic physical therapy, neurologic physical therapy and the PTs role in health promotion, wellness and prevention. Morris has held multiple leadership roles in several APTA components including being a member of the founding Executive Committee and serving two terms as President for the APTA Aquatic PT Section. He also served three terms as Vice President and two terms as President for the Alabama Chapter of the APTA. He is recipient of multiple awards including the 2009 APTA Lucy Blair Service Award, the

2012 APTA Legislative Commitment Award, the 2012 Marilyn Gossman Award for Professionalism in PT, the 2016 Leadership Award from the Alabama Chapter of the APTA, and the 2022 APTA Marilyn Moffat Leadership Award. In 2017, he was inducted as an APTA Catherine Worthingham Fellow.

Tara Pearce

PT, DHS

Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Education in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She teaches coursework related to adult neurorehabilitation strategies, professional practice issues, clinical education, and health promotion and wellness in the entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She serves as a Trainer of the American Physical Therapy
Association Level 1 and Level 2 Credential Clinical Instructor Program.

Laura White, PT, DScPT

Board-Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist

Dr. Laura White is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Clinical Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).  She has MSPT and DScPT degrees from UAB and is an ABPTS board-certified geriatric clinical specialist. Laura currently serves as the APTA-AL Ethics Committee chair. Her professional passions are teaching and mentoring students and new graduates and working with underserved and cognitively impaired older adults to improve their mobility and quality of life.

LaDarius "LD" Woods, PT, DPT, PhD

Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

Dr. LaDarius “LD” Woods is an Associate Professor and Director of Belonging at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). LD earned his bachelor’s degree from Birmingham-Southern College, DPT from Alabama State University, and PhD from Auburn University. He is a Graduate from the APTA Higher Educational Leadership Fellowship, in addition to being a NSCA Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach and USAW Weightlifting Level I Coach. LD has been engaged at state level serving as the PT Representative At Large and a Delegate and national level within ACAPT. LD is currently serving on the APTA Nominating Committee, APTR CSM Programming Chair, APTA AL Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, and APTA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.
