This introductory course provides a foundational overview of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) anatomy, normal biomechanics, and basic physical therapy evaluation for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Designed for clinicians new to this area, the course covers high-level diagnostic classifications, outlines the PT’s role in team-based care, and reviews current evidence-based treatment guidelines. You'll also gain simple clinical tips to begin evaluating and treating common TMD presentations in a primary care setting.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply foundational physical therapy principles of evaluation and treatment of common TMD conditions.
- Understand the role of a primary care PT in management of TMD and creating collaborative relationships with other healthcare disciplines.
- Design an effective physical therapy intervention treatment plan for common TMD pathology.

Toan Q Tran
DPT
Dr. Tran is a PACT embedded Physical Therapist at a CBOC location with MVAHCS. He has extensive training in manual therapy, joint mobilization, PNE, orthopedics, musculoskeletal and sports medicine rehabilitation. Dr. Tran attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota, graduating as a Doctor in Physical Therapy in 2007.
