The session will utilize a case-based format in which learners will identify how challenges in the different domains of learning impact clinical reasoning. The perspectives of the Clinical Instructor and Director of Clinical Education will be shared across three different cases that highlight common issues seen with students who struggle in the acute care setting. Our focus will be on aspects of remediation such as diagnosis of specific student skills which are not meeting expectations, utilization of resources in assisting in this diagnosis, timing and format of various remediation activities and communication strategies across partners. Group discussion will be used to engage learners in application of best practices and open source sharing of ideas for student success.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:

  1. Identify how student challenges in the learning domains of cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills impact clinical reasoning.
  2. Discuss detection and diagnosis of the low-performing student during an acute care clinical experience.
  3. Examine interventions for the low-performing student from diagnosis to post-clinical remediation activities.
  4. Apply specific decision-making tools with a low-performing student utilizing domains of learning through case base application.
