Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy Certificate: Diagnosis, Rehabilitation, and Emerging Technologies

Advance your clinical decision-making and build practical strategies for diagnosing and managing rotator cuff tendinopathy.

Explore current clinical guidance for diagnosing rotator cuff tendinopathy and the factors that influence tendon injury, pain, and recovery. Examine biological, neuromuscular, neurological, and psychosocial considerations alongside evidence-based rehabilitation approaches and emerging technologies for assessing tendon pathology, healing, and functional loading.

What You’ll Learn

By completing this certificate, you'll be able to:

  • Apply current clinical practice guideline recommendations to diagnose rotator cuff tendinopathy.
  • Identify biological, neuromuscular, and neurological factors that contribute to rotator cuff tendinopathy.
  • Plan evidence-based, non-surgical rehabilitation strategies using patient-centered clinical decision-making.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies for assessing tendon pathology, healing, and functional loading.

Course Highlights

  • Certificate program: Complete four modules covering diagnosis, mechanisms of tendon injury and recovery, non-surgical rehabilitation, and emerging technologies in tendon assessment.
  • Flexible online learning: Complete this asynchronous, interactive certificate program on your schedule.
  • Clinical application: Apply course concepts to diagnosis, rehabilitation planning, progression of care, outcome measurement, and return to function.
  • Emerging technologies: Explore advances in imaging, tendon mechanical assessment, and wearable and sensor-based technologies.
  • Earn CEUs: 0.6 CEUs (6 contact hours)

Matthew D. Heindel

Matthew D. Heindel

PT, DPT, PhD

Matthew Heindel, PT, DPT, PhD is a physical therapist, orthopedic clinical specialist, and postdoctoral associate at Duke University's School of Medicine. He completed his PhD at the University of Southern California, where he studied the relative contributions of tendon structure and intrinsic brain connectivity using fMRI to shoulder disability and clinical outcomes in those with chronic rotator cuff tendinopathy. He is building on this work at Duke, where he is studying systemic markers of inflammation, spinal cord structure and function, and brain structure and function in those with chronic pain. He has published his research in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international levels. His research has been supported by the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research, the American Society of Biomechanics, and the National Institutes of Health.

Oscar Vila-Dieguez

Oscar Vila-Dieguez

PT, PhD

Oscar Vila-Dieguez, PT, PhD is a physical therapist and postdoctoral fellow in the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. His research focuses on patient characteristics that may lead to a positive or negative outcome to physical therapy interventions, primarily exercise. These characteristics include muscle-tendon morphology and biology, neuromuscular and biomechanical factors, psychological factors and systemic disease. Oscar has published his research in peer-reviewed journals and presented his research at the national and international levels. His research is supported by the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research and the American and International Societies of Biomechanics.

Kayla D. Seymore

Kayla D. Seymore

PhD

Kayla D. Seymore, PhD is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the University of Southern California’s Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. She has a PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science from the University of Delaware and Master’s degree in Exercise Sport Science from East Carolina University. Dr. Seymore’s current research focuses on the interaction of shoulder muscle function, patient personal factors, and tendon structural recovery in patients with rotator cuff tendinopathy. Her work is supported by the National Institutes of Health and she has published her research in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Seymore’s long-term goal is to identify mechanisms of tendon injury and recovery to develop patient-specific interventions.
