In this course, learners will sharpen their clinical decision-making skills for assessment strategies, diagnostic imaging, and differential diagnosis strategies for common conditions.

Course Details

  • Module 1: Imaging in Primary Care PT
    • Understand when and why imaging is appropriate in primary care PT, including legal and clinical considerations.
    • Learn how to write effective imaging orders and interpret results to guide patient care.
  • Module 2: Lab & Pharmacology Decision Making in Primary Care PT
    • Review strategies for assessing medication impact on physical function and adjusting care plans accordingly.
    • Learn how to evaluate, order, and interpret lab tests within your scope of practice to support symptom-based clinical decisions.
  • Module 3: Clinical Decision-Making Framework for Primary Care PT
    • Learn a structured, step-by-step framework for clinical decision making in primary care physical therapy.
    • Apply the funnel model to intake, triage, and case-based reasoning for efficient patient management.
  • Module 4: Differential Diagnoses of Common Diagnoses in the Primary Care Clinic 
    • Conducting a comprehensive physical therapy exam
    • Identifying signs, symptoms, and appropriate interventions for common conditions

Katie O'Bright

PT, DPT

Dr. Katie O’Bright is a board certified orthopedic Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) who graduated from Temple University in 2014. Upon graduation, she served in the United States Army as a Captain & physical therapist, primarily working in a multidisciplinary Soldier Centered Medical Home.

She furthered her education in the Military Musculoskeletal Residency in 2017, at which point she obtained her OCS. After her time in service, she was the lead physical therapist at the University of Oklahoma’s Stephenson Cancer Center, a team-based clinical setting where she enhanced her skills working with individuals with complex needs. Dr. O’Bright moved on to another multidisciplinary primary care practice in Pittsburgh before starting her own cash-based practice.

Dr O’Bright is a passionate educator who serves as adjunct faculty in several DPT programs. She is also the owner of Redefine Health Education, a continuing education company that focuses on enhancing the primary care and MSK imaging skills of physical therapists. Dr. O’Bright currently resides in the Greater Chicago area, and enjoys exercising and spending time outdoors with her husband, 2 sons, and Chocolate Lab. She dabbles in painting & veggie gardening, enjoys live music, and Buffalo Bills football.

Evan J. Petersen

PT, DSc, FAAOMPT

Dr. Petersen is the Director of Research and Faculty Development and an Associate Professor at the Bowling Green State University School of Physical and Occupational Therapy. He is a board-certified clinical specialist in orthopaedics and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists.

Dr. Petersen served for two decades as a military physical therapist, providing direct access care that emphasized rapid recovery, injury prevention, and long-term physical performance. He has taught musculoskeletal practice courses across entry-level, residency, and fellowship physical therapy programs. He remains active in research, with publications in leading journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy. He is a past recipient of the Rose Excellence in Research Award from the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. He has presented nationally and internationally on clinical reasoning, patient/client management, and differential diagnosis. Dr. Petersen earned a Doctor of Science degree and a master’s degree in physical therapy from Baylor University, and a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Brigham Young University.

Josh Halfpap

PT, DPT, DSc

Dr. Halfpap is an Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Clinical Education in the Bowling Green State University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. He received both his Doctor of Physical Therapy (2011) and Doctor of Science in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (2018) from the U.S. Army-Baylor University Graduate Program. 

Dr. Halfpap has served for over two decades as a military physical therapist in direct access physical therapy settings, with a focus on managing musculoskeletal conditions, promoting early intervention, and optimizing physical performance. He currently teaches courses in musculoskeletal practice, primary care physical therapy, and diagnostic imaging. He is a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic and Manual Physical Therapists. His research interests include orthopedics, direct access care, manual therapy, and clinical reasoning.

Rich Severin

PT, DPT, PhD

University of Illinois at Chicago

Rich Severin PT, DPT, PhD is a board-certified cardiovascular and pulmonary clinical specialist. Dr. Severin is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the program coordinator of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Clinically he serves as the program coordinator of the UIC/UIHealth bariatric surgery rehabilitation program. Additionally, he serves as a member of the APTA Science and Practice Affairs Committee, associate editor of Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal and is the incoming Chief Delegate for the APTA Academy of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy. He has published scholarly work and presented both nationally and internationally on the topics of respiratory muscle performance, ultrasonographic imaging, and medical screening in physical therapy practice.  

Helena Esmonde

PT, DPT

Helena Esmonde, PT, DPT, Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist has specialized in treating patients with neurologic, balance, and vestibular conditions since 2008. Helena passed her Vestibular Competency exam at Emory University in 2015, became certified to treat Cervicogenic Dizziness in 2016, and co-founded Vestibular First, a company which makes affordable infrared video goggles and educational tools, in 2017. Dedicated to student education, she serves as a guest lecturer and lab assistant at Arcadia, Harcum, and St. Joseph’s University. Helena has taught numerous vestibular continuing education courses, given professional lectures both in the U.S. and internationally, and hosts an online Journal Club with renowned vestibular experts serving as her special guests each month.
