In the field of Physical Therapy, a lack of LGBTQ+ specific education has given rise to deficiencies in LGBTQ+ cultural competence and humility. Such deficiencies have created a climate of discrimination and disparity across a multitude of social determinants of health; ultimately leading to decreased access to health and healthcare. The purpose of this course is to promote education and awareness to the Physical Therapy community (students, educators, and clinicians) to enhance cultural competence and cultural humility, promote understanding of basic LGBTQ+ terminology and concepts and to provide an in-depth discussion of the current factors that have been found to contribute to disparity and discrimination amongst the LGBTQIA+ community. This course will provide the clinician with a guide outlining specific strategies aimed at enhancing the inclusive climate within their home institutions and systems. Through this course the Physical Therapy profession will be better able to advocate for and implement change in the service to the LGBTQ+ community.
Learning Objectives:
- Differentiate current factors contributing to disparity amongst the LGBTQ+ community in the Physical Therapy clinical settings.
- Discuss LGBTQ+ inclusion terminology and concepts.
- Describe how biases impact clinical care.
- Develop strategies to create an inclusive clinical environment.
- Propose avenues for personal action to improve LGBTQ+ patient experiences
