Burnout doesn't happen overnight, and understanding its causes is the first step toward preventing it.
In this course, you'll explore the key dimensions of burnout and the six common areas where job and person fit may be misaligned, while discovering practical strategies to enhance well-being, boost engagement, and foster greater fulfillment at work.

Learning Objectives:
- Define burnout and its dimensions (exhaustion, cynicism, and ineffectiveness) and profiles (burnout, overextended, disengaged, ineffective, engaged).
- Describe and identify the six potential mismatches between job/person fit.
- Identify and apply action strategies for the individual: coping with stress.
- Identify and apply action strategies for the workplace: addressing mismatches and promoting an ideal job/person fit.

Allison Smith
PT, DPT, PhD, OCS
Allison Smith is an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota where she helps teach anatomy, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, ethics, documentation and reimbursement, and contemporary PT practice. She is a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. She received her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis in 2014 and her PhD in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman's University in Houston in 2021. Her clinical experience is in outpatient orthopedics with a focus on underserved communities and post-op trauma. She is involved in state advocacy efforts as part of APTA Minnesota's Governmental Affairs Committee and is involved in national advocacy efforts as the Federal Affairs Liaison for APTA's Academy of Education.
