This course focuses on the inpatient treatment of individuals following lower limb amputation in the pre-prosthetic phase. It includes common challenges impacting recovery following lower limb amputation, wound management and limb shaping in the pre-prosthetic phase, outcome measures and interventional care examples, and identifying resources available. This course includes actionable takeaways that can be applied immediately to patient care.

Target Audience: This course is designed as a refresher for clinicians treating individuals with lower limb amputation in the inpatient setting. It follows guidelines recommended by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guidelines from 2025 and incorporates findings from recent research.

  1. Identify common challenges impacting recovery following lower limb amputation. 
  2. Describe wound management and limb shaping in the pre-prosthetic phase. 
  3. Determine appropriate equipment, outcome measures, and interventional care following lower limb amputation. 
  4. Identify resources available for amputees.

Corrine Fritcher-Nelson is a Physical Therapist with Encompass Health Valley of the Sun in Glendale, Arizona. She received her Bachelor's in Biology from Augustana University in 2015, and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from A.T. Still University in 2019. She is a board certified neurologic clinical specialist (NCS) and certified brain injury specialist (CBIS). She is an active member of several teams at Encompass Health including the Amputee Team, Wound Team, Equipment Team, Brain Injury Team, and Spinal Cord Injury Team. Through these appointments she educates staff, patients, and the community on amputee care, fall prevention, and diabetes management. She is also an adjunct faculty member assisting in neuro, geriatrics, and complex patient management courses.

Jaclyn Yaden, PT, DPT

Encompass Health Valley of the Sun

Jaclyn Yaden is a Physical Therapist with Encompass Health Valley of the Sun in Glendale, Arizona. She received her Bachelors in Kinesiology from University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012, and her Doctor in Physical Therapy from Franklin Pierce University in 2015. Jaclyn is currently the Regional Wound Program Coordinator for the western region of Encompass Health and a regional trainer for the Satori Method (crisis prevention). Additionally, she is a board certified neurologic clinical specialist (NCS) and certified brain injury specialist (CBIS). Jaclyn is an adjunct faculty member at two local physical therapy schools assisting in a multitude of classes.
