Jurisprudence is the science and application of law to practical situations. To assure practice in an ethical and legal manner, clinicians must first thoroughly understand the laws, rules and regulations that govern physical therapy. In Alabama, new graduates are required to pass a jurisprudence exam for licensure and current licensees are required to take a course on Alabama PT laws and regulations once every two years to renew their license The purpose of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the laws, rules and regulations that govern physical therapy practice in Alabama through case studies, discussions, and lecture. This course is appropriate for PTs and PTAs and will fulfill the newly established requirements for licensure renewal in Alabama. The course is also helpful for PT and PTA students preparing to take the jurisprudence exam.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine the goals, make-up, and responsibilities of the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy.
- Identify the purpose and format of the Alabama Physical Therapy Practice Act and Administrative Code.
- Analyze legal and ethical questions concerning related to the practice of physical therapy using the Alabama Physical Therapy Practice Act and Administrative Code.
- Apply ethical and legal decision making to determine effective and efficient answers to legal/ethical case studies presented within the course.
David M Morris
PT, PhD, FAPTA
Dr. Morris is UAB Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He earned a BS in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; a MS in physical therapy education and a PhD in health education/promotion from UAB. He is also a Credentialed Fellowship Graduate from the APTA Education Leadership Institute Fellowship. He has been a member of the UAB Constraint Induced (CI) Therapy Research Group since 1994. He is Training Coordinator for the UAB Training for CI Therapy program and conducts CI therapy training programs for rehabilitation professionals worldwide. He has authored and/or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters concerning the topics of aquatic physical therapy, neurologic physical therapy and the PTs role in health promotion, wellness and prevention. Morris has held multiple leadership roles in several APTA components including being a member of the founding Executive Committee and serving two terms as President for the APTA Aquatic PT Section. He also served three terms as Vice President and two terms as President for the Alabama Chapter of the APTA. He is recipient of multiple awards including the 2009 APTA Lucy Blair Service Award, the
2012 APTA Legislative Commitment Award, the 2012 Marilyn Gossman Award for Professionalism in PT, the 2016 Leadership Award from the Alabama Chapter of the APTA, and the 2022 APTA Marilyn Moffat Leadership Award. In 2017, he was inducted as an APTA Catherine Worthingham Fellow.
