Menopause can have a profound impact on musculoskeletal health, pelvic floor function, and overall quality of life, yet it’s often overlooked in clinical care. This course equips physical therapists with the knowledge to recognize common menopausal symptoms, understand their connection to the core and pelvic floor, and apply treatment strategies informed by the Musculoskeletal Syndrome of Menopause. Emphasis is also placed on improving interdisciplinary communication to support more comprehensive, individualized care for women across the menopause continuum.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least 4-5 major perimenopausal, menopausal, and/or post-menopausal symptoms impacting quality of life.
  2. Describe the Musculoskeletal Syndrome of Menopause and how it impacts patient care plans.
  3. Identify core and pelvic floor muscles and describe how they are impacted by the symptoms of menopause.
  4. Identify key players in the interdisciplinary team for optimal management of patients during the menopause continuum.

Ingrid Harm-Ernandes

PT, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Women's Health Physical Therapy

Ms. Harm-Ernandes has been a physical therapist for over 40 years and began specializing in Women’s Health over 28 years ago. She was the Co-Director and a mentor for the Duke Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program, mentor for new pelvic PTs, and participated in PFDN research. She is board certified in Women’s Health (WCS)and served on committees for both the APTA and AUGS. She published “Assessment of the Pelvic Floor and Associated Musculoskeletal System”, in the FPMRS journal in December 2021. In 2021 she published her book, “The Musculoskeletal Mystery: How to solve your pelvic floor symptoms”. Ingrid also served on committees for both the APTA and AUGS and is a member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the National Menopause Foundation. In addition to national and international speaking engagements, Ingrid has been featured in magazines, podcasts, webinars, on WRAL news, and is “The Pelvic Detective” on YouTube.
