    Learning Objectives:

    1. Describe the EDGE task force systematic review process to evaluate and recommend clinical measures for pain in patients with cancer.
    2. Describe important criteria for evaluating and selecting clinical measures of pain for use in clinical practice.
    3. Utilize the EDGE task force recommendations to select measures of pain in an oncology practice setting.
    4. Describe the psychometric properties for recommended clinical measures of pain.

    Dr. Shana Harrington

    Clinical Associate Professor

    Dr. Harrington is a Clinical Associate Professor, Physical Therapy Program, Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. Dr. Harrington's primary research interests involve the areas of survivorship and patient reported outcome measures in cancer survivors. Additionally, her research career has focused on assessment of upper extremity impairments in women diagnosed with breast cancer as well as the overhead athlete. Dr. Harrington is well known internationally and has published and presented extensively in the fields of oncology physical therapy, orthopaedic and sports rehabilitation, pain and evidence-based practice.

    Susan Miale

    PT, DPT, EdD

    Dr. Miale graduated from the University of Scranton with her Master of Physical Therapy degree in 2000. She began her career at The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center where she gained experience in acute care, outpatient orthopedics, neurologic rehabilitation, andboth inpatient and outpatient pediatrics. Her devotion to treating children earned her two awards for both advanced clinical skills and assisting with overall departmental efficiency and management. In2006, Dr. Miale was hired by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where she maintained the position of Physical Therapy Pediatric Specialist. She initiated several new pediatrics programs, including the creation of a new screening tool for acute care pediatric oncology. She was also responsible for all new employee orientation in the areas of pediatrics and airway clearance techniques. 

    Dr. Miale received her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2008 and is a Pediatric Certified Specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) since 2007. She was hired as an adjunct faculty member in the DPT program at StonyBrook University in 2008 and became a core faculty member in 2011. She received her Doctor of Education (EdD) degree from the University of St. Augustine in 2019. Dr. Miale has given lectures and in-services across the country on physical therapy intervention for children with cancer and served as the Chair of the Pediatric Oncology Special Interest Group in the Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy of the APTA for four years (2014 – 2018). She also served on the APTA EDGE (Evidence Database to Guide Effectiveness) Task Force to review outcome measures in terms of clinical utility and psychometric properties. She completed two reviews for patients with breast cancer and led an EDGE Task Force to review outcome measures specific to pain in children with cancer. Dr. Miale is also one of the founding members of ACAPT's Simulation in Physical Therapy Education Consortium where she currently serves as the Director-at-Large.

    Dr. Miale’s teaching responsibilities in the DPT program include Foundations of Patient Care and Growth and Development across the Lifespan on the Southampton campus, and Cardiopulmonary PhysicalTherapy I and II on both the Stony Brook and Southampton campuses. Dr. Miale plans to continue her scholarly agenda in educational research in the area of classroom-based simulation in physical therapy education.

    This OncoReads self-study course focuses on valid and reliable screening and assessment tools for cancer-related fatigue, which drives rehabilitation strategies and effectiveness of interventions.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Define cancer-related fatigue and understand its impact on function and health-related quality of life.
    2. Demonstrate an understanding of underlying causes and other medical conditions related to fatigue.
    3. Be able to delineate the difference between screening and assessment as it relates to cancer-related fatigue.

    Mary Insana Fisher

    PT, PhD, Board Certified Clinical Orthopedic Specialist, Certified Lymphedema Therapist

    Dr. Fisher is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Dayton. She graduated from Boston University with a Master of Science in Physical Therapy, and earned her PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Kentucky. She has more than 25 years of clinical practice experience ranging from acute care to orthopedics and oncology rehabilitation. Additionally, she received her initial and advanced lymphedema training at the Foeldi Clinic in Germany. She serves on the Miami Valley Hospital Premier Health Oncology Committee, served as Secretary of the Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, and is Senior Editor of Rehabilitation Oncology. Dr. Fisher has been teaching physical therapy over 20 years, and serves in an advisory capacity to physical therapy and physical therapists assistant programs. Dr. Fisher’s current research interest focuses on the field of oncology rehabilitation in terms of functional return, cancer-related fatigue and quality of life, as well as measurement issues related to outcomes in oncology rehabilitation. She has presented her work nationally and internationally, and published in such peer-reviewed journals as Rehabilitation Oncology, the Journal of Women’s Health Physical Therapy, The Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, and Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation.

    Joy C. Cohn

    PT, Certified Lymphedema Therapist

    Joy is affiliated with Good Shepherd Penn Partners in Philadelphia, PA where she was Lymphedema Team Leader until April 2018. She continues to mentor new staff with this organization. Joy has treated lymphedema for 20+ years and established a clinic for the Abramson Cancer Center, University of Pennsylvania Health System dedicated to addressing all of the rehabilitation needs in the oncology population. She teaches nationally and internationally for the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy and has been an adjunct instructor in several academic programs. She has published research / contributed chapters in the fields of orthopedics, neuromuscular stimulation and oncology/lymphedema. She has been a proud member of the APTA for 40+ years.
