Persistent Pain in the Direct Access Setting

Persistent pain is quite prevalent, affecting one out of every five Americans according to recent CDC data.  Physical therapists practicing in primary care or direct access settings will doubtless encounter patients who have persistent pain conditions.  These cases can be complex and challenging to navigate.  The goal for this presentation is to give clinicians to work in primary care or direct access settings are helpful framework from which to understand persistent pain and how to effectively address it in the clinic.

Molly J. Lahn

PT, DPT, PhD

Molly J. Lahn has been a clinician inthe outpatient setting for 24 years, specializing in persistent pain disorders.Her PhD studies focused on the science and practice of mind-body medicine andits role in our evolving healthcare system. Dr. Lahn is a clinical specialistwith the Minneapolis VA Healthcare System, where she helped develop aCARF-accredited pain rehabilitation program. She has served as associatefaculty with the Center for Mind-Body Medicine and has conducted training forboth healthcare professionals and patients in stress resiliency andtrauma-informed care.   

Derek Haugen

PT, DPT, OCS

Derek Haugen has been practicing invarious outpatient settings since 2010. He has worked at the Minneapolis VAHealthcare System since 2016 where he is a member of the Comprehensive PainCenter staff.  

Sydney Swenson

PT, DPT, OCS

Sydney Swenson has been practicing inthe outpatient setting since 2017. She began her career with the Minneapolis VAHealthcare System and has been serving veterans for nearly 6 years. Sheprovides care in both the general outpatient setting, as well as within theMinneapolis VA Comprehensive Pain Center. She is passionate about empoweringothers to increase the utilization of pain neuroscience education across all PTsettings.  

Ruth Chase

OTR/L, MA

Ruth Chase has been working in bothinpatient and outpatient settings since 2020. She is passionate aboutintegrating a trauma-informed approach in every encounter and has had extendededucation in motivational interviewing, pain-neuroscience, and biofeedback. Shehas developed a variety of patient-centered resources including a web-basedmulti-media resource library, clinician treatment guide for virtual reality forpain treatment, and extensive content for a CARF-accredited pain rehabilitationprogram.
