Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is characterized by physical, mental health or cognitive problems that may adversely affect functioning, are slow to resolve, and are accompanied by substantial caregiver burden. This session will analyze what we know about PICS to provide PTs and PTAs about strategies for managing patients with PICS to promote functioning and reduce the risk for hospital readmission. That framework will then be translated to problems (eg, weakness, pain, reduced functioning, and fatigue) from post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) to inform strategies for examination and interventions.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the problems associated with post-acute sequelae of COVI-19 (PASC) and post-intensive care syndrome (PICS).
  2. Identify essential components of the physical therapist’s examination and evaluation for PASC and PICS.
  3. Describe rehabilitation intervention strategies for PASC and PICS.
