Prediction, Prevention, Plasticity, and Participation in Multiple Sclerosis

Recent estimates indicate that the prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in the US has exceeded 1 million people. The progression of MS is unpredictable in speed and severity. The result is a heterogeneous presentation that is often difficult for the physical therapy professional to adequately rehabilitate. At the IV STEP Conference in 2016, the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy and the Academy of Pediatric Physical Therapy issued a challenge for physical therapy professionals to consider a new perspective. IV STEP focused on 4 Ps: Prevention, Prediction, Plasticity, and Participation. This course will apply the principles of the 4 Ps to PT management of people with MS, with the aim of advancing PT practice. The speakers will discuss prediction of progression of both the disease and problems with participation, activity, and body structure and function. Clinicians will learn about preventative measures that might be taken to minimize these problems or their impact. Attendees will learn how to apply principles of neuroplasticity to rehabilitation of people with MS. The speakers also will discuss measurements of and interventions to maximize participation in people with MS. Clinical cases will exemplify how clinicians can apply the 4 Ps in their day-to-day practice when working with people with MS.
