This session was presented in person at the Peer2Peer NetWorking Summit on April 30, 2026, in Alexandria, VA.

.02 CEUs/ 2.0 Contact Hours
Course level: Intermediate

This leadership peer group course equips physical therapy practice owners to do the real work of a CEO: intentionally building culture, developing people, and constructing high-performing teams that drive sustainable growth. Designed specifically for outpatient PT business environments, the content directly addresses challenges unique to physical therapy practices — clinician-to-owner transitions, productivity pressures, reimbursement constraints, staff retention, and scaling multi-provider teams without losing culture.

Participants will learn how to operationalize core values inside a clinical setting, implement structured leadership development pathways for clinicians and administrative staff, and design accountability systems that align patient care quality with financial performance. Through case studies, peer discussion, and practical frameworks, owners will gain tools to strengthen team communication, clarify roles, increase engagement, and reduce owner dependency in day-to-day operations.

By the end of the course, participants will improve their ability to lead beyond clinical expertise, build leadership capacity within their practice, and create scalable systems that enhance both patient outcomes and business performance. The result is a stronger organization where culture supports clinical excellence and business sustainability.

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

1. Identify key culture drivers within a physical therapy practice and evaluate how they influence team performance, retention, and patient outcomes.
2. Outline a structured leadership development pathway for clinicians and administrative staff that supports practice growth and reduces owner dependency.
3. Design accountability systems and organizational structures that align clinical quality, team performance, and financial sustainability within an outpatient PT practice.

Russel A. Certo, PT (Moderator)

Russell is a graduate of Quinnipiac University. He began his career working as a Staff Therapist in hospital systems including the University of North Carolina Hospital and Duke University Hospital. In 1988 he opened his own Private Practice in Grand Island NY. His practice had grown and there was a need in community for fitness services and he began to develop the idea of a medically oriented gym. In January of 2005 the first M.O.G. medically oriented gym site was established and began delivering evidenced based fitness programming to not only patients but also to healthy motivated members of the community. Private Practitioners across the country were interested in developing their own M.O.G site. By the end of 2007 the MOG Group, a co-op of M.O.G. sites owned by Independent Physical Therapy Practices, began its mission of providing a central place for these sites to share policies, procedures and business practices.

A recent merger brought the business to 6 clinical sites, 5 school based contracts and 4 medical fitness facilities. As part of his Peer 2 Peer experience Russ along with rich baudry and Dan Bajus created a 12 month curriculum for young PT's to learn and develop Leadership skills.
