This course provides in-depth instruction in the educational structure and skill development necessary for residency and fellowship clinical mentoring. The course is designed to guide individuals in how to design, implement and evaluate mentoring experiences in post-graduate residencies and fellowships. Topics will include: characteristics of a good mentor and how mentoring differs from traditional teaching, how to structure productive mentoring sessions to facilitate clinical reasoning and decision making, strategies for mentoring the challenging resident, planning remediation sessions, methods for facilitating communication between faculty members and between faculty and residents, and assessment of the effectiveness of the mentoring experiences.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify similarities and differences between serving as a clinical instructor in clinical education and serving as a mentor in residency of fellowship education. 

2. Describe the characteristics of a good mentor.

3. Structure and analyze mentoring experiences that build on the core components of reflective thinking and clinical reasoning principles. 

4. Design and apply methods for developing and evaluating mentors' skills in faculty members.

5. Develop and apply strategies for addressing common mentoring challenges in the teaching and learning environment in residency and fellowship education.

6. Compare and contrast essential qualities of a successful mentoring program with your experience and/or program
