An important goal of physical therapist education in acute care is to ensure that all students achieve appropriate levels of clinical competency commensurate with their academic preparation. Academic programs must be equipped to offer specific, individualized, and organized remediation when a student’s skills fall below specific benchmarks. Presenters will engage academic and clinical educators in a discussion of remediation practices for the student who struggles on clinical experiences in the acute care setting. We will describe the process, format, resources, timing, and decision-making tools which are utilized in one doctor of physical therapy program and one urban hospital. The focus will be on aspects of remediation such as diagnosis of specific student skills which are not meeting expectations; use of resources in assisting in this diagnosis; timing and format of various remediation activities, such as simulation and part-time clinical experiences; and conceptual models used to assist in decision making along the way. Case studies with a clinical partner and role play activity will be used to engage attendees in a discussion of best practices.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe components of a comprehensive remediation process within a DPT program and hospital setting.
- Discuss detection and diagnosis of the low-performing student during an acute care clinical experience.
- Examine timing of intervention for the low-performing student from diagnosis to post-clinical remediation activities.
- Apply specific decision-making tools with a low-performing student, using a case study.
