This course provides a framework for evaluating shoulder pain using a movement system impairment approach. This is especially helpful for treatment of subacute/chronic shoulder pain when care is delivered remotely and a manual approach is not feasible. Discover how to deliver quality care that empowers the patient and strengthens the therapeutic alliance.
Learning Objectives:
1. Name the components of the movement system
2. Describe the kinesiopathologic model of movement system
3. Define role of repeated movements and sustained postures on tissue adaptations in the shoulder complex
4. Describe how relative stiffness and relative flexibility contribute to shoulder pain and abnormal movement in the shoulder joint complex
5. Identify normal and abnormal scapular position, statically and dynamically
6. Utilize verbal and tactile cues to perform secondary movement tests
7. Categorize shoulder pain using movement modification and symptom alleviation
8. Recognize role of prolonged postures and repetitive movements on chronic shoulder pain
9. Describe limitations of virtual assessments and participants who would be better served by an in person, traditional physical therapy evaluation
Devon Wolf
PT, DPT
Devon Wolf, PT, DPT is a movement system impairment(MSI) fellowship trained clinician through Washington Univ St. Louis. She has worked for 10 years at the James Haley VA in Tampa, FL with the last 5 years spent in outpatient orthopedics. Like many, she has had to transition to telehealth since March and, currently, 100% of her caseload is virtual. Having made (nearly) every mistake in the book since this transition, she feels this presentation may smooth the road ahead as more care is delivered in this way.
