The elbow is a complex joint designed to withstand a variety of forces. Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, thorough history, meticulous physical examination, and knowledge of alternative or confounding pathology are the keys to accurate diagnosis. Due to multifaceted anatomy of the region and broad differential diagnosis, it may be difficult to determine the exact underlying pathology based solely on the clinical exam. Physical therapists are highly qualified professionals who are trained to recognize signs and symptoms and use diagnostic tests like electromyography, nerve conduction studies, and ultrasound imaging to discover the impairment and guide patient management. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies are useful to localize and describe the lesion and understand the prognosis. Presenters will discuss the role of electrodiagnostic studies, the neuroanatomy and neuropathophysiology of the elbow, and how to integrate this knowledge to direct clinical interventions. Ultrasound imaging is a rapidly growing and popular point-of-care assessment tool which has its application in understanding structural perspective of neural and non-neural pathology. It can provide insight into anomalies or abnormalities of soft tissue and osseous structures in the joint. Attendees will learn about the role of ultrasound imaging in understanding elbow pathology.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss evidence and importance of electrodiagnosis and ultrasound imaging as tools in clinical examination for the physical therapist treating elbow pathology.
  2. Demonstrate the findings of electrodiagnosis and ultrasound imaging with its clinical correlates.
  3. Integrate clinical relevance of both tools and their appropriate use with respect to the patient plan of care.
  4. Discuss how adding electrodiagnosis and ultrasound imaging can advance the knowledge of the problem and result in better patient management.
