Direct-to-Employer Services Designation Program
Many Private Practice members are frustrated with the limitations of reimbursement and administrative burdens of business as usual with commercial payors and recognize bypassing insurance companies and directly contracting with employers as a way to create a new revenue stream that is less burdensome and has greater upside for their practice. Most of the practices already contracting with employers are doing so at the local level, wherever their clinic is located. Most of these practices are providing services to companies from 25-100 employees, with a few from 100-500 employees.
This program is designed for the APTA Private Practice members who are contemplating providing direct-to-employer (D2E) services as well as those just starting down this path. This designation program will help you begin the process with greater confidence and avoid mistakes others have made, therefore increasing your likelihood of success! The Direct-to-Employer Services Designation program consists of three modules delivered using synchronous and asynchronous virtual formats. While it is recommended to attend each module in order to understand better the information provided, registrants can begin their D2E journey with any of the three modules.
Competency is demonstrated by the completion of each module and a passing score of 70% on post-module testing. Upon completion of all three modules, participants can earn up to 8.0 contact hours.

The modules of the program will include:
Module 1: “Effectively Connecting and Meeting with Employers to Pursue Direct Services” | Presented by: Jeff Hathaway, PT, DPT; Josh A. Bailey, PT, DPT
Module 1 has been enhanced into two parts:
1. Pre-recorded presentation (accessible in the Learning Center)
2. Interactive role-playing workshop
Interactive role-playing workshops via Zoom will be held on three separate occasions in 2024. Choose ONE session to attend:
1. Tuesday, April 23, 2024 | 2pm - 5pm ET (Sign-ups close April 7!)
2. Tuesday, August 27, 2024 | 2pm - 5pm ET
3. Tuesday, October 22, 2024 | 2pm - 5pm ET
The live, 3-hour interactive role-playing workshop will train participants in initiating meetings with employers and conducting effective discussions to navigate from the initial conversation to a mutually beneficial solution.
Due to the interactive nature of this session, participation is limited to the first 20 registrants per session. The Module 1 Workshop will not be recorded. Participants must attend the entire live presentation and have viewed the pre-recording, as the content will not be repeated during the workshop.
Module 2: “Understanding the Business of Direct-to-Employer Contracting” | Presented by: Holly Johnson, PT, DPT; Kelly Sanders, PT, DPT, ATC; Rick Katz, PT, DPT, MA
This course was recorded in December 2022
This module is a virtual instructional session on the business of providing and contracting direct-to-employer services. Topic areas will include proposal creation, product planning, implementation, and product support and management. This module prepares the participant to enter into simple service contracts that involve low-risk contracting, such as payment at an hourly rate or project rate. Contracting can have many features too numerous for a module like this, and it takes time and experience to develop the knowledge and skills for more complex and higher-risk contracts.
Module 3: “Legal Considerations for Direct-to-Employer Services” | Presented by: Paul Welk, PT, JD; Albert Lee, JD
This course was recorded in January 2023
This course will explore some of the legal and regulatory issues that arise with direct-to-employer contracting for physical therapy and other services. It will touch upon issues related to workers' compensation, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other key legal topics to provide participants with a basic understanding of how these issues relate to the provision of services. This course will also cover some of the key contract provisions to consider when contracting directly with employers.
