Through participation in this course the learner will understand the reliability and construct validity of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) and Gait Speed (GS) tests in older cancer survivors, including standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change for clinical application.

Learning Objectives:

  1. The learner will be able to recognize the importance of mobility measures in assessing the fall risk for older cancer survivors.
  2. The learner will understand test procedures for evaluating GS (usual, fast and dual-task), TUG, TUG-cognitive and TUG-manual.
  3. The learner will understand the reliability and validity of these mobility measures in older cancer patients.
  4. The learner will be able to apply the SEM and MDC95 when utilizing these mobility measures in older adult cancer survivors clinically.

Jennifer Blackwood

PT, PhD

Dr. Blackwood is a Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and an associate professor of Physical Therapy in the physical therapy department at the University of Michigan-Flint. Dr. Blackwood has won numerous teaching and research awards at the University of Michigan – Flint as well as at the State and National levels. As a mentor, Dr. Blackwood’s goal is to challenge students to seek the evidence first and to become the best version of themselves through leadership, research, and community service opportunities. Her research focuses on factors which contribute to physical activity, mobility, and falls in older adults with a specific emphasis on those with early cognitive declines as a result of pathology (Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s disease) or other disease associated sequalae (chemotherapy induced cognitive impairment).
