This course provides an inside look at the inpatient rehabilitation journey during the early stages of brain injury recovery. Participants will learn how brain injury location affects function, how to address cognitive, emotional, and behavioral challenges in therapy sessions, and how to apply level-based treatment strategies to support safe mobility, meaningful participation, and discharge readiness. The course emphasizes practical clinical decision-making for physical therapists working in acute and subacute inpatient rehabilitation settings.

Emily Plavchak
PT, DPT
Emily Plavchak, is the Senior Physical Therapist with Encompass Health Northwest Tucson. She received her Bachelors in Health and Kinesiology from Purdue University in 2015, and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Trine University in 2019. Her career has primarily been in the inpatient rehabilitation setting, where she has developed a passion for treating neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinsons, etc. She has certifications in stroke rehabilitation (CSRS), brain injury (CBIS), and vestibular assessment and management from the American Institute of Balance. She is also an active member on the STOP committee through Encompass Health where she educates staff on techniques for safe patient mobilization.
Theresa Beckmann
PT, DPT
Theresa Beckmann is the Therapy Manager with Encompass Health East Valley in Mesa, Arizona. She Received her Bachelors in Sports Science from St. Catherine University in 2006 and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from University of St. Augustine in 2009. Her career has been focused on inpatient rehabilitation and serving patients with neurological conditions. She received her board certification in neurologic physical therapy in 2014, and has served as a residency mentor with A.T. Still University. She has served on disease specific certifications teams for Stroke, Amputation, and Brain Injury.
