Welcome to the fourth course of the PT Educator Risk Management Toolkit!

This module equips physical therapists with essential knowledge about professional liability insurance (PLI) and risk management strategies. Learners will explore how to identify and mitigate professional risks, evaluate insurance providers and policies, and understand when and how to engage their insurer. Through real-world scenarios and practical guidance, this course empowers clinicians to make informed decisions that protect their practice, license, and livelihood.

  • Define risk management and apply its core steps: identify, assess, mitigate, and monitor.
  • Describe key risk control strategies: avoidance, reduction, transfer, and acceptance.
  • Explain professional liability insurance and who needs it.
  • Assess insurers based on reputation, financial strength, and claims support.
  • Identify essential policy features like legal defense, license protection, and riders.

Course Instructions

1. Click on the Contents tab to watch the course recording.
2. Click the Take Quiz button to complete the assessment. Learners will have 3 attempts to pass and must answer at least 70% of questions correctly.
3. Click Fill Out Survey under the Evaluation listing to provide valuable course feedback. Scroll down on all questions as there may be answer options that expand past the size of the window.
4. Click the View/Print Your Certificate button under the Certificate listing. You can view/print your certificate at any time by visiting the APTA Learning Center and clicking the CEU Certificate/Transcript link on the left-hand side of the page.
