(South_Carolina_Chemo_Induced_Neuropathy) This course will cover the background of why chemotherapy causes neuropathy, what the previous evidence is about treating neuropathy, study of outcome measures and tests for evaluating neuropathy, a review of a case series of 20 patients treated at Hollings Cancer Center, with both multiple myeloma and breast cancer, over 2 years, and hands on education of the manual therapy technique and resistance band exercise for treating patients with CIPN.

    Course Description:

65% of patients receiving chemotherapy will develop neuropathy in their hands or feet. Neuropathy presents as pain, numbness, tingling, burning, swelling and discomfort that affects quality of life. Currently there is no protocol for treating CIPN. Physical therapy, broadly, has been shown to be helpful for CIPN. Physical therapy techniques such as manual therapy, resistance exercises, stretching and balance training have shown themselves to be effective for similar conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, Morton’s Neuroma, and Plantar Fasciitis. Combining the evidence and putting it into practice, we are developing a protocol, shown to be 80% effective in patients with various cancer types with CIPN, to decrease symptoms, decrease fall risk, and get patients back to walking and feeling like themselves over the course of about 8-12 weeks. This course will cover the background of why chemotherapy causes neuropathy, what the previous evidence is about treating neuropathy, study of outcome measures and tests for evaluating neuropathy, a review of a case series of 20 patients treated at Hollings Cancer Center, with both multiple myeloma and breast cancer, over 2 years, and hands on education of the manual therapy technique and resistance band exercise for treating patients with CIPN.

    Learning Objectives:

    *  Be able to describe how and why chemotherapy may result in neuropathic pain

    *  Be comfortable assessing and developing a treatment plan for patients with CIPN

    *  Be comfortable with hands on performance of manual therapy for treatment of CIPN

    *  Be able to develop and follow a plan of care from initial evaluation to graduation for patients with CIPN

(South_Carolina_Home_Exercises_Telehealth) This course explores the barriers and facilitators in optimizing physical therapy treatment sessions by examining a telehealth-supported research trial that involved post-stroke patients.

    Session Description

Physical therapists are tasked with creating effective home exercise programs (HEP) for patients who may have complex presentations, chronic illness, and limited ability to travel to the clinic to be seen. Telehealth is a viable option for expanding our reach and optimizing care. In 2024, the APTA published Clinical Practice Guidelines for the use of telehealth in PT, which advised that PTs do the following based on moderate to high evidence:

“…recommend telerehabilitation or hybrid care, as they are at least equivalent to in-person PT with respect to patient acceptability and satisfaction and are superior to in-person PT with respect to adherence and attendance for certain health conditions.”

“…identify and work to reduce barriers and promote facilitators identified from the patient’s perspectives and experiences when planning and providing telerehabilitation services.”

This course explores the barriers and facilitators in optimizing physical therapy treatment sessions by examining a telehealth-supported research trial that involved post-stroke patients. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills with their peers in a supportive environment to improve their ability to implement telehealth services effectively.

    Learning Objectives

     * Recognize the challenges in implementing effective home exercise programs for post-stroke patients, specifically when transitioning from in-lab/clinic to at-home settings.

    *  Identify strategies for ensuring safety and efficacy in at-home post-stroke rehabilitation, including the use of caregiver support, motivational interviewing, and regular telehealth check-ins.

    *  Develop methods for adapting home exercise programs based on participants’ individual preferences, goals, resources, cognitive abilities, and social support to maximize adherence and engagement.

    *  Evaluate the role of telehealth in providing flexibility and modifications to home exercise programs, enhancing participants' compliance with home exercise programs.

    *  Assess the impact of motivational interviewing and tailored interventions on participant motivation, commitment, and success in meeting long-term rehabilitation goals.
